Injured Shikhar Dhawan to remain in England, no replacement to be called in for the Indian opener

Left-handed Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan, who sustained a thumb injury while batting against Australia, will remain under medical observation and travel with the team, according to a statement released by the BCCI team management on Tuesday.

“Team India opening batsman Mr Shikhar Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team. The team management has decided that Mr Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored,” said BCCI in a media release.

Dhawan underwent scans of his left thumb in Leeds and after a meeting between coach Ravi Shastri, captain Virat Kohli, bowling coach Bharat Arun and physio Patrick Farhart that lasted for 20 to 30 minutes, the decision was made to not call in a replacement for the southpaw.

33-year-old Dhawan was the star of India’s win over Australia on Sunday with a knock of 117 runs from 109 deliveries.
