Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play begins, No 1 Shivaram and No 2 Bhuwan advances 

 

KATHMANDU, April 24: Top ranked golfer Shiva Ram Shrestha, Bhuwan Nagarkoti, Sanjay Lama, Dhana Thapa, Rabi Kadka, Jayaram Shrestha, Pashupati Sharma and Bal Bhadra Rai advanced to the quarter-finals of the Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play at the Royal Nepal Golf Club on Monday.

Nepal No 1 pro Shiva Ram of RNGC defeated Pradeep Kumar Lama 3&2. While Bhuwan Nagarkoti won over Yelamber Adhikari 3&2 as well. Sanjay Lama defeated Bikash Adhikari 2&1 while Dhana Thapa outplayed Ram Krishna Shrestha 5&4.

Pashupati Sharma defeated last event champion Rame Magar 5&3. Similarly Bal Bhadra Rai outplayed veteran pro Deepak Magar 1 up on the last hole. Rabi Khadka also won over Ramesh Nagarkoti 1up on the final hole today.

Match between Jayaram Shrestha and Surya Prasad Sharma was the most interesting match of the day, they were tied after regular 18 holes of play, and went to sudden death play-off. Jayaram defeated Surya on the second extra hole.

In Wednesday’s quarter-finals, Shiva Ram will face his brother Jayaram Shrestha, Dhana Thapa will be up against Rabi khadka. Sanjay Lama will take on Pashupati Sharma and Bhuwan Nagarkoti will play against Bal Bhadra Rai of Dharan. The semi-finals are also slated for Tuesday, while the third-place and final matches are slated for Wednesday. The final will be played over 36 holes, while other matches will be of 18 holes.

A total of 16 pros – top 16 in the last year’s Order of Merit – took part in the tournament. Out of the total cash purse of Rs 250,000, the top four pros will receive Rs 70,000, Rs 40,000, Rs 28,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively, whereas losing quarter-finalists will earn Rs 11,000 each. Likewise, the first-round losers will get Rs 6,000 apiece.
