Former CM of Bihar Lalu Prasad sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in scam case

NEW DELHI, Jan 6: Former chief minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison and fined Rs 10 lakh on Saturday by a special CBI court in the second fodder scam case+ in which he was found guilty.

Specifically, Lalu was fined Rs 5 lakh in each of two cases in the scam. Failure to pay would lead to a six-month extension to his term.

The sentence was delivered today via video conferencing after being postponed three times this week.

While completing sentencing hearings in this fodder scam case today, Judge Shivpal Singh wryly observed that “an open jail is best for the convicts, because they have experience in cow farming.”

The former chief minister of Bihar is currently lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi.
