'CPN-Maoist won't join CA irrespective of seats offered'

KATHMANDU, DEC 01 – CPN-Maoist Vice Chairman CP Gajurel has said that his party will not be part of the Constituent Assembly (CA) irrespective of the number of seats offered to it.

Speaking at a programme organised in the Capital on Sunday, leader Gajurel refuted having said that, as suggested by some media reports, his party will join CA on the condition of a ‘respectable’ place in the elected assembly.

“Our party firmly rejects such proposals of inducting us into CA through recommendation,” said Gajurel, dispelling speculations that some of the CPN-Maoist leaders might join the CA though Cabinet recommendation.

Two hundred forty CA members have already been elected under the first-past-the-past (FPTP) category, while the names of 335 candidates under the Proportional Representation (PR) system will soon be finalised by the Election Commission. The remaining 26 candidates, who will complete the 601-member assembly, will be nominated by the Cabinet.

Nepali Congress and UML, among other parties, have been mulling the option of inducting CPN-Maoist leaders under the 26 nomination seats to bring the party onboard the CA.

While saying that his party’s agenda of roundtable conference was still relevant even after the conduction of polls, the CPN-Maoist leader made it clear that his party would not be part of the Government or the CA.
