Campaigning ends tonight

KATHMANDU, NOV 16: Election campaigning ends on Saturday night but for the next three days, people will have a chance to think about what they’ve heard, seen and felt during the last several years. It will be a time for introspection. However, will they be left in peace?

If past trends are any indication, candidates will be busy canvassing votes in other ways: through private meetings, through party workers trying to convince voters throughout the night, through contractors being paid out to bring voters to the booths, and through liquor parties. Incidents of violence are increasing. A lot of things are at stake.
The electoral outcome will determine the nature of federalism, forms of governance and democratic culture in Nepal.
